Typhoon Ompong Postpones AGW in MM, Luzon; VisMin and Some Countries Go Ahead
Friday, September 28, 2018

THE ANCOP Global Walk (AGW) is a much-anticipated event in Couples for Christ. For the past eight years, members of CFC, ANCOP scholars, partners, and the general public have looked forward to the one day of the year when brethren from all over the world walk for the benefit of ANCOP scholars.

This year, the AGW was scheduled on Sunday, September 16, not just in Metro Manila but in many areas in the Philippines and the world. However, because of the threat of Typhoon Ompong (International name: Mangkhut) in the Philippines on that particular weekend, the leadership of CFC and ANCOP jointly decided to postpone the AGW in Metro Manila and Northeastern, Western and Central Luzon, areas over which the typhoon was expected to pass.

The provinces of CALABARZON?Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon?also postponed their AGW, as well as the provinces of MIMAROPA (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan). Two provinces of MIMAROPA, however, had already held their AGW the weekend before, as did the provinces of the Bicol region. Bicol had timed their AGW with the Feast of the Our Lady of Peñafrancia.

“We are all deeply dedicated to the Lord and the poor, but we are also entrusted the responsibility to decide what is best for the safety of members and participants,” said CFC Chairman Melo Villaroman Jr. in an official advisory released on Thursday, September 13, 2018.

The provinces in the Visayas and Mindanao decided to push through with AGW. Capiz, Negros Occidental, Negros Oriental, Leyte, and Southern Leyte in the Visayas; and Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga Sibugay, Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga City, Agusan del Sur, Agusan del Norte, Sultan Kudarat, Misamis Occidental, Misamis Oriental, Cagayan De Oro, Davao City, Davao Del Sur, Davao Del Norte, Davao Oriental, Bukidnon, Camiguin, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, Lanao del Norte, Basilan, Tawi-Tawi, Compostela Valley, Davao Oriental, Maguindanao, Sargen, and South Cotabato in Mindanao held their respective Walks as scheduled.

Countries like Japan, Indonesia, regions in the U.S and the United Kingdom also held their Walk on September 16.

The ANCOP Global Walk is an annual event that aims to raise awareness about CFC’s mission to the poor, particularly the Education Program. It is also one of the ways that ANCOP raises funds for more than 2,000 scholars funded by the Walk alone.

The AGW piloted in Canada in 2003. After two years, ANCOP USA adopted the AGW. In 2011, the annual fundraiser was elevated into a global event of Couples for Christ and ANCOP in order to allow many people, including children and the elderly, to participate since walking is an activity that everyone can do.

For Metro Manila and the provinces in Luzon, the ANCOP Global Walk will take place on Sunday, November 4, 2018, while Metro Cebu is on October 28, 2018. (CFC Global Comm)
