Monday, July 30, 2018

COUPLES for Christ, represented by Jun and Malou Clarito, Eastern Africa Regional Head and missionaries based in Canada, was invited by Cardinal Berhaneyesus D. Souraphiel, Metropolitan Archbishop of Addis Ababa to the 19th Plenary Assembly of the Association of Member Episcopal Conferences in Eastern Africa (AMECEA), held from July 13 to 23, 2018 in Ethiopia. Ethiopia is Africa’s oldest independent country and its second largest in terms of population.

The invitation came through AMECEA Secretary Rev. Fr. Ferdinand Lugonzo. During the Solidarity Message of the six lay partners invited, Clarito was given a chance to present how CFC is helping and working with the Catholic church.

Close to 100 bishops and cardinals traveled to Addis Ababa, capital of Ethiopia, for the AMECEA.

The theme of the plenary is “Vibrant diversity, equal dignity, peaceful unity, in God in AMECEA Region.” AMECEA has nine member countries, namely: Ethiopia, Eritrea, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Sudan, South Sudan, Zambia and Malawi. Djibouti and Somalia are affiliate members. Ethiopia hosted this year’s plenary assembly which is being done every four years.

Various topics and workshops were held, such as Integral Part of Human Development, Peaceful Coexistence, and Unity in the AMACEA Region.

The plenary assembly for the delegates ended with a half day tour of Ethiopia, well known as the Land of the Origins.

The plenary assembly was formally opened with the Eucharistic celebration in Ethiopian rites, where close to 10,000 faithful attended. (M. P. Clarito)
