Cornerstone Moving Up Day in the Visayas
Wednesday, April 25, 2018

The Cornerstone Program in the Visayas completed another school year. Moving up were children at different levels or phases of learning, all of them benefited bythe Cornerstone program of teaching them how to read.

Thirty-five elementary schools and 20 high schools conducted their respective Moving Up ceremonies and High School closing activity during the month of March. There were also several Kids Day/ Camps, Youth Camps and CLPs conducted for Cornerstone tutees and their parents. The Cornerstone program is CFC’s gateway to evangelization for the children and their families.

Ms. Lorna Samuya, principal of Tiangue Elementary School in Cebu, commended Cornerstone for its efforts, not only in reading tutorials but more so for the values formation program given by the volunteers to the parents.

According to Samuya, she has witnessed a big change in the behavior of her pupils, who have become more respectful and motivated to go to school. Ms. Aireene Godines, Soong Elementary School principal, who was hands-on during the Moving Up day, and who has been a staunch supporter of the program, shared the same sentiments.

The children showcased their talents in dancing and singing as their way of entertaining their delighted parents and other guests. Some Grade 5 and 6 pupils in Tiangue Elementary School received awards of appreciation for helping their little brothers and sisters to also learn their ABCs. The awardees were once tutees in the same school, and were recognized for paying it forward even in their own simple way.

Though celebrated differently from school to school, children and parents always came in their best attire for Moving Up Day. However, some had to wear their school uniforms because they could not afford to buy new shoes or clothes for the occasion. In spite of this, the pride in the tutees’ faces and the joy in their parents’ eyes could not be extinguished.(Ma. Cresty Tomenio)
