A Full House at the 1st Chapter Leaders Summit
Tuesday, July 11, 2017

CFC held its first ever Chapter Leaders Summit last June 23, 2017 at the SMX Convention, Pasay City.

The event, held as part of the 36th anniversary of the community, began with Fr. Rolly Garcia, Secretary to the Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines, celebrating the Eucharist, together with some foreign clergy who had attended the Clergy-Lay Congress two days before. After the Mass, CFC Chairman Joe Tale welcomed the Chapter Leaders from the Metro Manila, Provincial and International Missions.

Philippine Missions Director Joe Yamamoto tackled the first session, expounding on what chapter leadership is all about.

Yamamoto reiterated that the chapter structure is the key to fulfilling the mission and vision of Couples for Christ, and encouraged all chapter leaders to revisit the Chapter Heads Manual. Yamamoto stressed that a chapter leader must have the balance of pastoral and administrative roles, as well as balance between family and service/work.

Michael Ariola, in the next session titled Strengthening the Core, Expanding the Reach, exhorted the participants to embrace the call of being chapter leaders, with the goal of growing in formation and evangelization.

“The hardest thing to do is to unlearn,” Ariola began, referring to the practices which leaders have grown accustomed to, but must not be preserved and propagated.

He stressed that humility is key to unlearning, as well as honesty. Ariola then proceeded to the Establishment, Enrichment and Empowerment activity where the leaders identified which stage their chapters are in terms of population and leadership, as well as growth in numbers and formation.

The open forum followed, moderated by Norman and Gemma Robles, with a panel composed of Rouquel Ponte, Ariola and Yamamoto, together with Mike Bukuhan, Boyet Rafael and James Solano.

Ponte concluded the summit with an empowerment exercise, reminding the chapter leaders that they have been appointed shepherds anointed to look after the welfare of their sheep, and leading them to recommit themselves to such responsibility. He ended with a prayer: “May our hearts remain pointed to only two directions—the Lord and His people!” (Alma Alvarez)
