CFC Center for New Evangelization in Rome Turns 1
Thursday, March 9, 2017

From darkness to light, from the cold to the warmth of the Holy Spirit!  This was how the Couples for Christ Global Center in Rome has been transformed after one year of existence.

The office and residence unit was turned over by the Vatican APSA office to CFC on February 18, 2016 and blessed two days later on a cold winter day during the opening of the CFC Europe Leaders Summit in Rome that year.  The place then had no electricity (thus, no heating), no water and no operating toilets!  However, the dark, cold and dry (waterless) setting was warmed and brightened by the large and overflowing number of enthusiastic and dedicated CFC Europe and international leaders who attended the important milestone, led by CFC Chairman Joe Tale and wife Babylou, and CFC Europe Continent Overseer Rouquel Ponte and wife Nina.

On February 20, 2017, CFC celebrated the 1st anniversary of the Center. The celebration was done the day after the close of the 2017 CFC Europe Leaders Retreat and Conference held in Assisi, Italy.  It was a simple celebration—a Holy Mass and a simple get-together after.  Main celebrant was Fr. Dannie Huang, Jesuit Regional Assistant for Asia Pacific based in Rome.  Also present were Fr. Jojo Magadia, Jesuit Delegate for Formation, and Fr. Michael McCoy of the UK who, with Fr. Greg Gaston, Rector of the Pontificio Collegio Filippino in Rome, were concelebrants during the inauguration of the center.  Members of the International Council Rouquel Ponte and wife Nina , and George Campos with wife Cynthia celebrated with CFC Europe.

Today, the CFC Center for New Evangelization continues to strengthen CFC’s relationship with the Vatican and affirm CFC’s oneness with the Catholic Church’s direction for new evangelization, aimed especially at the faithful in Europe.  The Center performs a dual role—as a center for Vatican Relations and as a mission center for CFC Europe.  The center is now officially called COUPLES FOR CHRIST, SEDE DI ROMA, CENTER FOR NEW EVANGELIZATION.  “Sede di Roma” is Italian for “Headquarters in Rome”. “Sede” is an Italian word rich in meaning that includes “office”, “seat” or “See” as in “Holy See”.  The CFC Center in Rome is also a 2nd Global Center for Couples for Christ.

As it celebrates its 1st Anniversary, the CFC Center for New Evangelization in Rome celebrates the attainment of some important milestones:

  • appointment of a fulltime missionary couple to head the center
  •  establishment of a legal entity in Italy called Couples for Christ Italy, and opening of a bank account;
  •  first meetings with two new prefects of the Vatican involved in the life and mission of Couples for Christ: Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Prefect of the Dicastery on the Laity, Family and Life, and Cardinal Peter Turkson, Prefect of the Dicastery on Integral Human Development
  •  initial meetings for possible collaboration with the CFC Institute: the Pontifical Academy for Life, and the John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family.

The CFC Center in Rome is the venue of various Christian Life Programs, teachings and assemblies of the CFC Chapter in Rome. The Center continues to collaborate with entities based in Rome in areas of common interest, such as the SVD congregation in its work with the poor in Africa and Filipino organizations in Rome catering to migrant workers.

Just recently, two new regional areas have been created for CFC EuropeEastern Europe and the Nordic Region—to enhance CFC’s evangelization work in the continent.  Initial plans are now being made to hold the 1st CFC Global Leaders Convention in Rome, hopefully to be graced by no less than Pope Francis himself.  With these developments, Couples for Christ is indeed ushering a new era of evangelization in Europe and the world.
