Dear CFC brethren,

Tomorrow we go to the polls to vote for leaders who will govern the country in the next 6 years (3 years for our local leaders). As in every election, it is a defining moment for our country.

It will also be a defining moment for the family for we foresee that many issues affecting the family will be put forward in the agenda in the next 6 years.

This campaign has been one of the most vicious, especially because we now have social media where opinions, accusations and untruths are aired. It is understandable that there will be differences in opinion and discussion and debate, but it is regrettable that some of us went about it in a personally hurting and unchristian manner, going beyond the civility of what we expect of a renewed person. We are of course an imperfect people, but we need to do some more soul searching and intensify our efforts so we can become the Christian model we ought to be in every situation, including in an election setting.

The International Council has issued three (3) statements. First, in our full page ad, we asked that we choose candidates who value the family, for we are after all a family renewal community. We should be consistent in upholding family values even in a political exercise. Second, we shared the pastoral statement of our bishops. We profess after all that we are one with the Catholic Church, as expressed in our expanded vision statement.

Third, we informed the community of CFC brethren running for national office. This was not an endorsement, but an information we should share.

On this, the day before the elections, let us immerse ourselves in prayer and reflection. We ask that more than just a political exercise, we also consider the pastoral consequences of our vote.

But after all that is said and done, we appeal to all that we respect each other's opinion. Let us put behind us any differences. The elections will be over soon. But I hope that our being CFC will be forever.

A final word: our theme anchor verse this year says in part that "by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, . . . the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:4-7)

May we all have peace in our minds and peace in the Lord as we cast our vote.
