Laying our Cares at Mama Mary’s Feet

For the second time, our house was blessed by the presence of Mama Mary when our family hosted the 2,000 Hail Marys devotion on January 6, 2018. We first hosted the devotion last year, also in January, to coincide with our 30th wedding anniversary.

My husband and I saw it fit to offer thanksgiving for our 30 years of togetherness, and at the same time lay our cares and woes at the foot of Mama Mary.

Our sector, West C, started the 2,000 Hail Mary devotion in 2012 when one of our members was undergoing a very difficult time. Then sector head Steve Maningat initiated it at the house of George and Chit Miravite. Members of the sector’s Mission Core, 20 couples in all, took turns in reciting the 2,000 Hail Marys, with each couple praying 100 Hail Marys.

At the start, the devotion was done quarterly on the first Saturday of the month beginning the quarter. As more members heard about the devotion, more families requested to host it, thus it became a regular monthly event. And so every month, for one whole day, we become intercessors as we prayed for one another, and for anyone who asked for intercession. While a couple is reciting the Hail Mary’s, everyone is free to drop a petition letter in a box. The petitions are then burned at the end of the ses-sion, usually at 5:00 PM.

The 2,000 Hail Mary devotion was started by two Salesian seminarians, Daniel Ara and Juan Riu, in Barcelona, Spain on March 25, 1933. Juan Riu started reciting the 2,000 Hail Marys, so that his dream of becoming a Salesian priest and a missionary will be granted. His prayers were answered one after the other. In his 50 years as a priest, he successfully promoted the 2000 Hail Mary devotion. We in West C are glad that we are able to propagate it in our little corner of the metropolis. (Marla J. Rances)
