Sure Foundation

The entire area around us was shaking, as if we were experiencing an intensity 8 earthquake! The experience seemed surreal to me, recalling the July 16, 1990 tremor that shook Luzon. I remember that back then, I grabbed my first-born sonfrom his play pen as the earth trembled! But this time, there was complete darkness! It was pitch black!

I realized I was holding the left hand of my Luvin’!(that’s my wife Cynthia). And then reality set in. It was not an earthquake. We were aboard an airplaneand had been awakened by a sudden air turbulence. Because of the darkness and sudden jolt from sleep, I had momentarily forgotten temporarily where I was.Why was it dark? As I recalled, after praying the rosary, I had pressed the startbutton of my Spotify playlist, plugged the earphones in my ears, and positioned my panda sleeping mask.

In just a few minutes, I had dozed off. I couldn’t even remember the plane takingoff, and being jolted awakefelt like being in the Twilight Zone. I pleaded for God’s deliverance and eventually thanked Him when calm set in. I breathed a sigh of relief. Buti na lang walang masamang nangyari, magpa-Pasko pa naman!

In reflection, it was like that during the first Christmas—the world was incomplete darkness. Heaven’s gates were shut. God’s chosenpeople were waiting forsomething good to happen.Their lives had been shaken because of the Roman conquest of Israel, and therewas nothing good to hold on to but their communal faith in God.

The Nativity of our LordJ esus Christ is just around the corner. Let us not take for granted the significance of this most remarkable event in Christendom. Let us not be overwhelmed by the glitter of the Christmas lights, or by the rush of buying gifts, or by the late night partying. What if, during our Noche Buena, we just turn off the lights for a while and say a prayer with our whole family?

Let us hold hands, praise God and thank Him for Christmas! Because once, despite the darkness in the world, there was light—JesusChrist our Savior was born. He has opened the gates of heaven and brought salvationto you and me, andour loved ones! He is theultimate expression of God’slove to all of us. Heaven sent!

Truly THE GOOD NEWS for all time! Jesus is someone whom we can hold on to,even if our life is shaken—our sure foundation! As a gift this season, allow me to share this very beautiful prayer from Henri J.M. Nouwen: Lord Jesus, Master of both the light and the darkness, send your Holy Spiritupon our preparations for Christmas.

We who have so much to do seek quiet spaces to hear your voice each day. We who are anxious overmany things look forwardto your coming among us. We who are blessed inso many ways long forthe complete joy of your kingdom.

We whose hearts are heavy seek the joy ofyour presence. We are your people, walkingin darkness, yet seekingthe light. To you we say, “Come Lord Jesus!”
