YFC a Proud Kalakbay

In its continuous pursuit of being one with the Catholic Church, YFC set sail for "Asia's Latin City", Zamboanga City, for the 2017 National Youth Day (NYD)last November 6-10, 2017.Thousands of youth from different dioceses across the country gathered for fellowship, sessions, training and workshops echoing the World Youth Day theme, "The Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name"(Luke 1:49).

Not only were the pilgrims welcomed with hospitality, but the whole NYD paved the way for more young people to come to know God deeper and to share their journey with their co-pilgrims as well. Opening the NYD festivities was a High Mass celebrated by the Most Reverend Romulo T. Dela Cruz of the Archdiocese of Zamboanga. The Mass was followed by a parade of the pilgrims from the Metropolitan Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception to Mayor Vitaliano D. Agan Coliseum for the Grand Opening Night, with performances from the local talents of Zamboanga and the NYD Animators. It was a festival of colors, music and dance. Zamboanga City Mayor Beng G. Climaco inspired the crowd with her welcoming remarks and partied with the pilgrims. The night ended with the pilgrims being assisted back to their host parishes where they were welcomed by their foster families. On the second day of the NYD, participants were divided into four festival sites namely Bethlehem, Jeru-salem, Nazareth and Cana, where the YFC delegation was assigned.

The first session titled “We are Flawed”, emphasized on man being flawed by nature. However, this flaw must not be a hindrance for man to fully receive the grace of God’s dream for him. In the afternoon, YFC delegates again were divided into different venues. YFC fulltime pastoral workers led the NYD runs, sharing with the pilgrims some of the programs of the ministry like #Kristogram, 100% Free, A Love Like This, A+ advocacy, and Bible Study workshop. The festivities concluded with a celebration of the Holy Mass at Fort Pilar Shrine.

Highlighting the third day was the second phase of the NYD runs and the Parish Night held in each of the host parishes. The YFC delegation was hosted at the Santa Maria Parish where they witnessed the talents of the parishoners and shared their own talents as well through an Acoustic Night. “No one can make a difference in this world unless God gives him the ability to do so”, His Eminence Orlando Cardinal Quevedo, OMI said in his homily during the commis-sioning and send-off Mass at the RT Lim Boulevard on the fourth day. The prelate highlighted the calling of the young to make a difference and to choose to do it with love. The mass ended with the unveiling of the NYD 2017 landmark, marking the historical hosting of Zamboanga City of the NYD 2017. In the evening, the Grand Noche De Fiesta was held at the Universidad de Zamboanga Summit Center where performances by Bukas Palad Music Ministry, Koro Zamboanga, New Soul Band, other Zamboanga local artists, and NYD Animators were showcased.

Spending almost a week in each other’s company, the pilgrims shared a lot of good laughs and long goodbyes as the NYD 2017 came to a close. A footprint marking activity was done to symbolize the oneness of the youth’s journey in defending the Catholic Faith and bringing more people closer to God. The National Youth Day is an annual youth gathering organized by the CBCP Episcopal Commission on Youth. Looking forward to the 2019 National Youth Day, His Excellency the Most Rev. Jose S. Palma, D.D., Archbishop of Cebu, invited everyone to say yes to God’s challenge to celebrate His love in Cebu City, Philippines.(Sarah Abigail Halal)
