Planting and Sowing Seeds in ANCOP

Home partners of the CFC ANCOP Tambuli Community received vegetable seeds from Dr. Florante Victor Madrid Balatico, Director of Extension Services of the Cagayan State University. This was in response to an earlier request of the Couples for Christ to CSU President Urdujah Tejada for a livelihood project for the new community.

Dr. Balaticeo explained that this is a major component of the “Sapat na Pagkain at Pangkabuhayan sa Bawat Tahanan” program of the state university. The pilot testing done in some areas in Cagayan showed that leafy vegetables like pechay, sweet potato tops, kangkong(upland) and alugbatileaves were harvestable one month after planting and fruiting vegetables after 2-3 months.

The association gladly accepted several packs consisting of pechay, tomatoes, corn, pepper (taban), mustard, etc. The members pledged to take good care of the seeds, and to make the ANCOP community a model community for vegetable farming.

Dr. Balatico also introduced the concept of edible landscaping, meaning that instead of ornamental plants, vegetables will be planted on the frontage of the houses. (Arthur Pagador)
