ANCOP Zumbathon

Last September 16, I was amazed to see the Assumption Parish Church hall in Ottawa, Canada packed with energetic and high spirited people ready to have fun for a great cause. They were all there to participate in an event called ZUMBATHON, a fundraising activity now on its fourth year.

The event is geared towards helping the poor through ANCOP. I was one of 12 volunteer instructors who were there to share our love for dance through a one-and-a-half hour Zumba dance fitness workout. The Zumbathon was open to all those eager to dance and willing to donate any amount for ANCOP.

I am an active member of Couples for Christ (CFC) Ottawa, and I conceived the whole idea of the fundraising Zumbathon when I became a licensed Zumba Instructor in 2014. During my birthday, I wanted to do something special, something meaningful that will allow me to give back to others for all the blessings I have been receiving.

As a Zumba instructor, I thought that a Zumbathon event will be a great way to advocate good health, promote active lifestyle and raise funds for charity, especially for ANCOP. The event was planned and executed with the help of my loving family and dedicated CFC brethren.

The first ever ANCOP Zumbathon was in 2014. At that time, I only had one volunteer instructor helping me out. But in the following years, more and more instructors joined, with this last event having 12 volunteer instructors who strongly believe in the great cause of ANCOP!

The event started with a short video presentation about ANCOP. I gave a short pep talk on what it takes to be a child sponsor, and encouraged participants to grab a form and read through all details from the ANCOP website. The 80 participants gave generously and we were happy to generate almost $1,000.

It is my hope and prayer to have a bigger crowd next year for another Zumba party. I believe that a simple act of love like this can bring bigger hope for the poor children and their families.(Rhea Rivilla)
