Reflections: CFC and the Vatican

It has been a year since CFC’s Vatican Office was officially opened. It has been a year of interacting and knowing more about the Vatican especially in areas affecting the life and mission of Couples for Christ. Now more than ever, I am convinced that Couples for Christ and its ministries are in the right direction and fall squarely within the directions of the Vatican, more particularly with Pope Francis’ avowed agenda for the Church. Couples for Christ now has the grand opportunity to pursue even more strongly its vision and mission.

Last June 8, 2017, the new Prefect of the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life, Cardinal Kevin Farrell, held a meeting in the Vatican with ecclesial movements. My wife Norma and I, together with then CFC Chairman, Joe Tale, and his wife Babylou, represented Couples for Christ. In Cardinal Farrell’s opening remarks, he called on everyone “to be especially attentive to the family and the young” focusing on these points:

On the family:

•  Form young people to affec-tive maturity and the voca-tion of marriage from adolescence on, or even earlier, from childhood

•  Determine effective paths of marriage preparation

•  Accompany young couples in the early years of marriage

•  Care for the ‘permanent formation’ of spouses and of the entire family

•  Support, help and counsel couples in difficulty.

On the young:

•  Employ [the movement’s] charism to boldly speak to the new generations.

•  Have a missionary impetus, especially for young people.

•  Go out to the ‘peripheries of the young’

Wow! For a while, I thought he was talking about Couples for Christ! Truth be told, CFC has been doing all these for the past 24 years (since the Family Ministries were established) or even longer!

Cardinal Farrell was simply echoing the sentiments of Pope Francis and the direction and priorities of his pontificate. On many occasions, the Pope has called on the people to protect the family and at all times accompany the young who are the hope of the future. Pope Francis has also repeatedly emphasized the important role of the laity in the life of the Church. He has said that he would like to see the lay people much more involved in the administration of the Church.

In his own words, the good Cardinal said, “I hear from all these consultative bodies I have here in the Vatican, but I’d like to hear from the lay people too! I have bishops and priests telling me what the lay people think, but I’d like to hear it from the people (themselves).” In fulfillment of this desire, Pope Francis has specifically mandated that the Undersecretaries of the 3 sections of the Dicastery—Laity, Family and Life—be lay people.
