WE STAND FOR JESUS!

Kids for Christ members from the Metro Manila sectors and their families joined other KFC members and their families from North Luzon and the International Missions at the Baguio Convention Center in Baguio City last April 28 to 30 for this year’s Family Conference. The conference, attended by over 2000 KFC, had the theme “We Stand for Jesus! This year’s conference had the theme “We Stand for Jesus”.

The FamCon had all the elements integral to every CFC conference – inspiring talks, even more inspiring testimonies, entertainment, praise and worship, and the daily Eucharist. In addition, it had sports challenges.

What made this conference different from other conferences is its focus on the family. Thus, throughout the conference, entire families did things together. Even the talks were delivered on stage by families. The sports challenges and entertainment programs also featured families.

Day 1: We are one in Jesus!

Avil Ortille, Provincial ROCK leader of Benguet, officially opened the FamCon with a praise fest after which all the families present participated in the sports and creative challenges.

The creatives challenges featured family dance showdown and music competitions. The sports challenges had family basketball shootout; family obstacle race; badminton, both for men’s and women’s division; table tennis, both for men’s and women’s division; and family relay.

After the challenges, it was time for spiritual nourishment. The Mass was celebrated by Rev. Fr. Benedict Jason Lopez, who used to be a KFC member and who narrated that his growth in the community inspired him to serve the Lord as a priest. In his homily, Fr. Benedict stated that “The Lord reminds us and tests our faith; the difference is within us, on how we see it in every situation. Even if we are rich or poor, we are one in Jesus.”

Mauricio Domogan, City Mayor of Baguio, welcomed all of the families and commended the parents for providing their children with events such as this which mold their values and discipline them in God’s grace.

The first session of the conference, “We are Family!” was delivered by Noli Manuel, SFC International Coordinator, who was joined on stage by his family. The Manuel family shared the importance of family time and expounded on three challenges that can weaken the love and faith of the family: spending less time together, having too many distractions and weakening of one’s faith.

Day 1 ended with the family praise parade with families from the different sectors and provinces, dressed in their Filipiniana attire, dancing to the music of the particular Philippine festival assigned to them.

Day 2: We Stand for Jesus!

Most Rev. Victor Benedico officiated at the Mass that began the second day of the conference. Noting that it was the feast of St. Catherine of Siena, Bishop Victor spoke of the life of St. Catherine and how, despite the struggles she faced within her family, her love and faith never ceased. “There will be difficulties that our family may encounter, but through love and understanding, surely God will not abandon us.”

Adrian Enaje, Kids for Christ International Coordinator, challenged the YFC ROCK Facilitators to strengthen their love for their service, to love boldly; to love excellently, to be a model of excellence in their service; and to love humbly.

Day 2 featured various workshops ranging from baking, how to achieve a healthy lifestyle, photography, care for the environment, painting, doing household chores, introduction to the lives of saints, calligraphy, public speaking and voice lessons.

ABLAZE President Rommel Ancheta along with his family delivered Session 2 entitled “We Stand for Jesus” which tackled the importance of having Jesus always at the center of the family, thanking Him for blessings, such as the food on the table, and how to spend quality time as a family. Ancheta also stressed the importance of always showing love for one another.

Josh Rosario, Mission Volunteer of West B, led the praisefest that ended the day.

Day 3: Do everything in love!

The last day of the conference was opened with Holy Mass celebrated by Rev. Fr. Jeffrey Habalo. Fr. Jeffrey, in his homily, spoke of his own family life. He shared his remorse at having to deny his own family and making big mistakes. “But along the way these mistakes converted me to someone who is just so proud to present my family to the world.” said Fr. Jeffrey.

He encouraged the kids to be proud of their families and to love them wholly. “Unless you love your family, you cannot truly love someone outside of it.” He concluded.

Dong Borja, fulltime pastoral worker of KFC, delivered the 3rd session entitled “Do everything in love!” Borja shared the importance of loving one’s family and encouraged the families to not only love one another but also to share one faith in the Lord.

Borja also led the inspiring praise fest, bringing to an end another faithful and fun-filled family conference. (Christina Quiambao)
