Stand Firm in the Faith!

Dear CFC Family,

Our anchor Bible verse for 2017 is this: “Be on your guard, stand firm in the faith, be courageous, be strong. Your every act should be done with love.” -1 Corinthians 16: 13-14

From this anchor verse, we have taken the key phrase “Stand Firm in the Faith”, as our theme for this year.

What does Stand Firm in the Faith mandate for us Christians? It means that we adhere to the following four main elements:

1. We must know and deepen our Faith.

2. We must apply our faith in our everyday life.

3. We must proclaim our faith.

4. We must be a witness of our faith.

What are the practical ways by which we can respond to this mandate?

First, we live out our CFC Covenant.

In that covenant, we promised to:

1. Have a consistent personal prayer and scripture time.

2. Conduct regular dialogue date with our spouse and children.

3. Faithfully attend household and other assemblies and gathering.

4. Serve with all our heart.

5. Study and grow as a Christian person.

Second, we strive to grow in the following virtues:

1. Prudence:

Prudence is being right in action. “It guides the other virtues by setting rule and measure; the prudent man determines and directs his conduct in accordance with this judgment.” (CCC 1806)

2. Justice:

Justice is “the moral virtue that consists in the constant and firm will to give others their due. The just man is distinguished by habitual right and thinking and the uprightness of his conduct toward his neighbor.” (CCC 1807)

3. Fortitude:

This is “the moral value that ensures firmness in difficulties and constancy in the pursuit of good. It enables one to conquer fear, even the fear of death, and to face trials and perceptions.”

(CCC 1808)

4. Temperance:

This is “the moral virtue that moderates the attraction of pleasure and provides balance in the use of created goods. It ensures the will’s mastery over instincts and keeps desires within the limits of what is honorable.” (CCC 1809)

The Blessings of 2016

We are one month into 2017, having left 2016 behind. During the year that has passed, we were able to affirm our mission through several directions and activities that stemmed from our major direction for the year which was to Strengthen the Core and Expand the reach. With this, we have put in place programs and activities to further develop our leaders and to reach out to more people. These are:

1.  Gateway Evangelization – programs and activities designed to acquaint people with our way of life, our advocacies and our vision and mission without necessarily compelling them to join. These include our programs for the migrants, the poor, married couples through our Marriage Enrichment programs for parishes, among others.

2. Amoris LætitiaWorkshop for leaders in the Metro Manila and Philippine Missions – an in-depth study of the teachings of Pope Francis embodied in his book Amoris  Laætitia or The Joy of Love.

3. Mission with the Poor retreat, as piloted by Metro Manila Central A sector

4. Theology of the Body Workshop

5. Missions 101 Certificate Course

6. ANCOP Global Walk

7. Pluma TV Series

8. Project ReForm

The Promise of 2017

For 2017, when we are called to Stand Firm in the Faith, we will intensify the following programs and activities:

1.  Family Evangelization

This program will involve the promotion of the family as the center of evangelization for this is where our mission and vision should be focused. Our children should be the first to feel the impact of our Christ centered way of life. Thus, we will engage our children and other family members in the work, bringing them deeper into community and giving them the opportunity to see us in action. We will continue the highly successful Kids for Christ Families on Mission which we began in Kenya in 2016. We will also revive the conduct of the Family Enrichment retreat.

2.  Gateway Evangelization

We will intensify our gateway evangelization efforts not only through the Migrants Program, the Prison Ministry and other programs but we will make our presence felt where people congregate – in the malls and in the parishes.

3.  Pluma 2

With the highly successful showing of the first season of Pluma, we are encouraged to embark on our second season. This time around, we will share more stories from the provinces and from abroad.

4. Radio Veritas Pamilyo Mo, Pamilya Ko

We have been invited to be part of this radio Veritas program. This will be a very good venue to inform many people of what we are and what we do.

5.  Greater parish Involvement

We have made initial engagements with a few parishes for involvement in the program called Basic Ecclesial Communities.

6.  Stand Firm in the Faith

Taking to heart the four points stated earlier—to know and deepen our faith, apply it in our daily life, proclaim our faith and to witness— these are our mandates as baptized Catholics.

7.  Catechism

As Catholics, we are called to be aware of the tenets of our faith and the teachings of our Church Fathers. Thus, we will begin an intensified campaign to conduct catechism for our members, and especially for our youth.

8.  Pilgrimage to the Holy Land

We thank Fr Carlos Santos, OFM, and spiritual adviser of CFC Israel, for the inspiration to instill in each and every CFC leader the desire to make the pilgrimage. This pilgrimage will be exclusively for CFC with all activities geared to relating them to the CFC life and mission. The pilgrimage will initially be timed for Lent and Advent.

9.  Leaders development

This will be a separate course program of the CFC Institute, designed to enhance the leadership skills of CFC leaders.

The same anchor verse that asks us to Stand Firm in the Faith also calls us to be strong and courageous!

We need to reaffirm our commitment to be part of God’s army and to follow our Commander in Chief. As we do so, may we follow Joshua’s commitment and make it our own: “If it is displeasing to you to serve the Lord, choose today whom you will serve, the gods your ancestors served beyond the river or the gods of the Amorites in whose country you are dwelling. As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:15
