CFC Migrants Program – Soaring to Greater Heights

Christians believe that God orchestrates everything and nothing happens by chance. The magical hand of the Lord was clearly evident when the CFC Migrants Program met Marissa Oca, a staunch advocate of improving the lives and welfare of seafarers and their families.

For the longest time, Ms. Oca has been looking for people who share her advocacy with the same intense passion and determination. Needless to say, the CFC Migrants Program headed by Jess Ferrer was also scouting and exploring possibilities to broaden its reach, touching the lives not only of land-based overseas Filipino workers, but of seafarers as well.

The aligned advocacies of the two groups perfectly matched like a jigsaw puzzle awaiting completion.

Ms. Oca is the daughter of Captain Gregorio Oca, one of the founders of AMOSUP (Associated Marine Officers’ and Seamen’s Union of the Philippines). This organization delivers holistic programs and services such as education programs, health programs, welfare plans, and other basic needs that Filipino seafarers deserve.  She is currently the administrator of AMOSUP’s community development programs. She also spearheaded the creation of Gig and Amazing Sampaguita Foundation Inc. (GASFI) named after her son who died in a tragic accident.  On his behalf, GASFI promotes reading literacy to children and their parents.

In her years and efforts in charity and development work, as well as her whole life immersed in the world of seafarers, Ms. Oca has been exposed to the problems they encounter, and the issues they need to resolve.

The Migrants Program of Couples for Christ has been conducting the Values Re-orientation Program for soon-to-depart migrant workers and their families, as well as financial literacy seminars in different institutions such as PASEI (Philippine Association of Service Exporters, Inc.), SM Global Pinoy, government units (national, provincial, barangays, etc.), parishes and schools.

The MP Team has been putting more and more effort to further their service into every corner of the country. On April 29, 2017, there will be a huge Migrants Convention encompassing the Calabarzon area to be held at the 8 Anchors Cultural Center Auditorium in Dasmariñas, Cavite. Members of the migrants/seafarers community, priests, parish directors, NGOs as well as CFC leaders are invited to this event. Ms. Oca has graciously provided the venue for this event, free of charge.

Currently, the CFC Migrants Program is slowly soaring to greater heights with the help of the Lord, but the work does not stop there. With the massive growth of the OFW community, the work has only just begun. Thankfully, the CFC Migrants Program is being blessed with a wide array of collaborations, affirming that the Lord is urging CFC to move forward in helping the migrants community. (Gitte Padagdagan)
