PONDERINGS: Light and Love
SCRIPTURE READING: 1 John 1:5-10 (God as Light) and 1 John 2:1 - 2 (Christ and His Commandments)

FOCUS: 1 John 1:5    “Now this is the message we have heard from Him and proclaim to you: God is light and in Him there is no darkness.”

FOCUS: 1 John 2 “ My children, I am writing this to you so that you may not commit sin.”

PERSONAL PONDERINGS:
There are two points that the footnotes explain to us:

1.    Meaning of Light and Darkness
  • Light – to be understood here as truth and goodness
  • Darkness – to be understood here as error and depravity.

To walk in the light or darkness is to live according to truth or error, not merely intellectual but moral as well.

2.    There us a total of 12 verses in this Scripture reading. Out of these twelve verses, the word “sin” is mentioned nine (9) times!!!. This emphasizes the gravity of message of Jesus on the aspect of sin and not sinning.

The more I walk in the knowledge of God and the more I pray for the grace to advance and grow in the life of virtues – the more the Holy Spirit opens my eyes to the following realizations:

1.    God’s infinite love for me never locks the door of His forgiveness. The time of my repentance is the time of pouring down upon me the fullness of His mercy.

2.    I need to follow and obey only the will of the Father whether I understand it or not. (I must not interpret light and dark, good and evil according to my own human understanding, logic and reason).

3.    It does not make sense to gamble away eternal life with Christ, in favor of earthly and worldly temporal pleasures.

PRAYER:
Most merciful Father, please help me to do only what is righteous in your sight. Rescue me, Lord, from the wiles and deceptions of the devil: Deliver me from my own errors which happen in moments when I do not have You in my consciousness. Lord, at all times please do not let me go.

DISCUSSION STARTER:

1.    Which of the seven capital sins (Pride, Anger, Lust, Avavice or Greed, Gluttony, Envy, Sloth or Laziness) cause a pattern of sinfulness in your life?

2.    How often do you go to the Sacrament of Reconciliation?
