PONDERINGS: A Resurrection Morning
SCRIPTURE READING: John 20:1-2,11-18 (The Crying of Mary of Magdala)

FOCUS: Verses 13 – 15

“And they (the angels) said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” … Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you looking for?”

Resurrection morning… two angels spoke: “Woman, why are you weeping?” Then, Jesus turn to ask: “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you looking for? “It may seem that next to Christ’s coming back to life—what mattered at that most glorious moment in Christian history Mary’s shedding of tears. But really, it was more than the tears, which were visible manifestations of the invisible condition of Mary’s heart: depth of sorrow, piercing pain, darkened world, shattered hopes and dreams. Tears in her eyes expressed the profound welling up of “lost love” which could not be continued within her heart.

More than the tears, Jesus and the angels saw the depth of love that drew Mary to the tomb—to be once again hear the Beloved. Discovering the Beloved gone and an intense longing to seek and claim Him back.

Heart language transcends physical hand contact. Jesus forbade Mary to touch Him. But Mary’s love had already touched and embraced His Heart.

In deep sorrow at times, we fail to see the Lord because the tears blind our eyes. The focus is more on what grieves us that we forget to seek God. When troubles weigh us down, we fail to see the Lord. Why? Because we are facing the wrong direction. We face the empty tomb while the Living God who is the answer to all life’s cares is standing just right behind us—waiting to be acknowledged, waiting to be recognized. Sometimes, it takes a deep hurt to feel a deep need for God. Turn around! Meet with Christ!

Lord, each time I begin to weep with my eyes but with my heart turned away from You, please grasp me by the shoulders; turn me around, and make me face and gaze at You. Amen

  1. Have you ever had a “Resurrection morning” experience? How did you finally recognize that Jesus was there?
  2. Share your “presence” with someone who carries a heavy load. (He/ She may not even be close to you. He/ She may just be anyone who the Lord whispers to you to go to.)
